    Beard Papa

    Beard Papa

When Beard Papa’s came to Los Angeles in October of 2005, there was great anticipation. Lines snaked through the Hollywood and Highland Center while people waited anxiously for their chance to taste the special cream puffs.

Three years later, many more locations have opened around LA and Frozen Yogurt has taken much of the thunder away from cream puffs. All the better though, because now you can pick up a Beard Papa without too much trouble.

If you haven’t been to a shop yet, it’s a fun treat. The hot baked puffs come out of the oven and are filled to order with the cream, which is actually a mixture of whipped cream and custard. Depending on the day, you can get filling flavors other then the original, such as strawberry or green tea. You can also choose to get an eclair style puff, which is dipped in chocolate - my favorite.

I’m not a custard fan, so Beard Papa hits my spot, because I do like whipped cream.

The Cream Puffs don’t save too well, because of their freshness and lack of preservatives. It’s best to consume them right away, especially if you get them warm.

When you have the chance, you really should check out the Beard Papa story, in all of it’s animated silliness.

  1. The one time I tried the Sawtelle location, the pastry was soggy and soft–really poor. I think the one in Gardena is the best–plus, the Marukai market there has some other good food stands (I like the cutlet place).

I have to say though, Chantilly in Torrance beats out Beard Papa in my book.

  2. Evan- That’s no good, soggy soft pastry is never tasty. It is good when you get make sure that they are coming right out of the oven.

Have you tried Angel Maid on Centinela? It’s on my list of places to go, supposed to be a good Japanese bakery with tasty cream puffs.

  3. Never heard of Angel Maid–I’ll look it up. Used to live in Long Beach, so the Gardena Beard Papa wasn’t too much of a drive, but I’m in Santa Monica now, so a new place would be good!

  4. Here’s a write up on Angel Maid until I can get over there:

It is super easy to miss, there is a very small parking lot in front of the store and it makes it hard to see the sign and entrance.

  5. My wife is a big fan of the banana roll at Angel Maid!

  6. Jonah–went to Angel Maid on Saturday. My wife, daughter and I were going to go to my parents’ house for breakfast on Sunday morning, and we had to go to Target on Saturday, so we thought we’d kill two birds with one stone and stop by Angel Maid and pick up something to take for Sunday. We got a very sizable almond flavored coffee cake, which was very good. Not heavy, and the almond flavor was really delicious, but not overpowering. We also picked up two of their cinnamon rolls–which came in cupcake wrappers, and layers of pastry dough sticking up (ugh, I’m really not doing this justice). Different, and excellent–it was nice to just unwrap them and peel off layers of cinnamony goodness. Again, not heavy at all.

Lastly, we tried some plain and chocolate covered cream puffs. These were our least favorite–pasty was a bit soft, but the cream was good, more custardy than Beard Papa. They were much smaller than Beard Papa’s (two-bite sized), and were 55 cents each (that was nice).

One big coffee cake, two cinnamon rolls, and four cream puffs for about $12. Not bad!

  7. Evan-
Thanks for the update! Prices sound good for baked goods, especially if they are tasty.

There is another bakery down the street that we like called Hotcakes Bakes. They have a really bad sign, but really good cupcakes and cookies. One of the best black and white cookies I have had. I’m not a huge cupcake person, but I like theirs because they aren’t too sweet. looks like they have cream puffs, but I haven’t tried them.

  8. Yes, we saw Hotcakes. My wife is a big b/w cookie fan, I’ll let her know. And I’ll try the cupcakes, but Yummy on Wilshire is still my favorite.

  9. Not sure if you will like the cupcakes at Hotcakes, they are very basic and light flavored. I find Yummy cupcakes to be a little over the top with their creative combinations and large amount of frosting. I know people who like them, but it’s a bit too much for my sensitive sweet tooth.
